ASSESSMENT POLICY


1. Assessment Definition

Assessment is a varied and continuous process concerned with gathering and exchanging information about a student's understanding, development and achievement.


2. Purpose of Assessment

It is the policy of this school that the forms of assessment used should provide the basis for honest feedback which:

" promotes a positive attitude to learning.

" encourages all students towards reaching their full potential.

" focuses on the positive aspects of students' learning whilst providing support and guidance in areas of need.

" provides a source of information for reporting.

" assists teachers to plan and to evaluate their programs.

" provides students with an insight into the process and value of assessment.

" contributes to each student achieving success in all learning areas.


3. Guidelines for Assessment

Assessment procedures will reflect the aims of the curriculum and:


" be communicated in a language which all members of the school community can understand.

" include a variety of techniques to demonstrate the full range of knowledge, skills and attributes that have been developed and which are of educational value.

" provide increasing opportunities for students to take responsibility for their learning, including peer and self assessment.

" provide justice and fairness for all students by ensuring that the criteria for successful completion of assessment tasks are clearly communicated.

" recognize that students have a range of preferred learning styles.

" provide students with a clear understanding of how they are progressing.

" provide appropriate opportunities and information for parents to take part in the assessment process.
